But what does a truffle actually mean?
This term comes from the truffle mushroom, which is also considered rare and valuable. The name was adopted due to the visual similarity of the tuber-shaped praline ball.Today, a truffle can take various forms; the characteristic type of truffle is a preparation of butter, cream and couverture, which is tempered and stirred until creamy. This cream is often refined with aromatic additions such as fruit, fine brandies or spices.
The truffle has a very thin chocolate shell, which releases a highly aromatic filling after a delicate 'crack'. These well-known fine specialties are still mainly made by hand today.
