The legend of Nicholas

St. Nicholas Day on December 6 is an integral part of the run-up to Christmas for many of us.
But who was this mysterious man who distributes his gifts during the night?
The legend of St. Nicholas dates back to the 3rd century.

Nicholas of Myra, as he was officially known, was a Christian bishop in the small town of Myra in modern-day Turkey.
He was known for his kindness and generosity, especially towards the needy.
One of his most famous acts of charity was saving three poor sisters from prostitution,
by secretly putting gold in their stockings, which were hanging in front of the fireplace to dry.

This story was the origin of the tradition of hiding gifts in boots or stockings - a tradition
which evolved over the centuries and eventually led to the modern Santa Claus.
